Recruitment FAQsWhat do Resident Assistants do?RA’s are typically continuing students who live in university accommodation and play a key role in supporting fellow residents. They contribute by fostering a welcoming community, organising events and activities, responding to enquiries, and assisting with tasks that ensure an inclusive and positive living environment at their accommodation site.Why be an RA?What are the contractual dates for the role?RAs will be required to complete online training on appointment to the role. Contractual dates for the role for undergraduate RAs then commence on the 4th September 2026 and will end on the undergraduate student lease end date (28th of May 2026). For postgraduate RAs the role will commence on the 4th September 2026 and will end on the postgraduate lease end date, 28th August 2027.RAs must be able to attend mandatory training on appointment to the role and must be available in-person with any isolation requirements completed during the January arrivals period (typically the first full week of January. RAs will be provided with accommodation for the full duration of contractual dates.How much are Resident Assistants paid?In return for the duties they provide as outlined in the role description, RA's will receive free accommodation during RA training 29th August – 5th September 2025 and further renumeration for a standard room allocated to them at their assigned accommodation from the start of the lease. RA’s will receive this renumeration while they actively remain in the role.What is the timeline for applying?Undergraduate RA applications are open throughout the month of January.Postgraduate RA applications are open throughout the month of April.The Application JourneyI've missed the application deadline - can I still apply?As we recruit for such large numbers we sometimes run multiple recruitment cycles and/or recruit during the academic year. Some exceptions have been made in the past for PG students who are enrolled on courses with atypical semester dates. We also often have summer RA opportunities for returning UG RAs to support our pre-sessional students. If you would like to request to be placed out-with this policy then please contact us at recruitment.reslife@ed.ac.uk before applying.What is the waitlist?If you are successful in the recruitment process, you will either be offered a position at an accommodation site or placed on our waitlist. Waitlisted candidates are provided with free accommodation during the full RA training and induction week and are required to take part alongside the rest of the team. This ensures they are fully prepared to step into an RA role as soon as a vacancy becomes available.If a candidate has not been allocated to a site by the start of training, they will still receive free accommodation for the duration of training week. After this period, accommodation charges will revert to the standard full rate (without RA remuneration) until they are placed in an RA position. While all waitlisted candidates in previous years have later been offered roles, this cannot be guaranteed.Vacancies can arise unpredictably, and waitlisted candidates should be prepared to move to a different accommodation site when a position becomes available. Remuneration begins from the date the candidate starts in the RA role. Please note that the more accommodation sites you select when indicating your preferences, the higher your chances of receiving an offer.If I secure a role this year, do I have to reapply to be a Resident Assistant each year?We have a different appointment process for candidates who are currently RAs at the University of Edinburgh, or who have been within the last two years. This is based on your performance in the role and conducted as part of progress review with your line manager. If you are not currently in an RA role but are interested in re-applying please contact recruitment.reslife@ed.ac.uk. For RAs in the role currently, please speak to your Line Manager.If I am unsuccessful, how soon can I apply again?If you have been unsuccessful in securing a role then we would not consider another application from you within 3 months of your original application. After 3 months has passed we can accept an application for future rounds of recruitment, but we would strongly encourage that you gain relevant experience prior to submitting new applications. You can find potential opportunities by contacting the Student Association or visiting My Career Hub run by the University of Edinburgh Careers Service. Do Resident Assistants get an annual leave entitlement?Resident Assistants must be available on site for all mandatory training dates as set out in the job description and contract. Outside of these periods, requests for time away from site will be considered.Please note that this is a residential role that depends on RAs being a consistent, visible presence within their accommodation community. Building relationships with residents, offering support, and maintaining a sense of responsibility all require regular on-site engagement. RAs are therefore expected to sleep at their assigned accommodation unless alternative arrangements have been agreed in advance. If you anticipate extensive travel or have significant academic or extracurricular commitments that would regularly take you off site, this role may not be suitable.Undergraduate RAs have no duties for a three-week period during Winter break and a two-week period during Spring break. Exact dates will be confirmed during appointment to the role. Time away from site outside these periods is not guaranteed but can usually be approved by line managers, provided it does not affect service delivery or team coverage.Postgraduate RAs on 51-week contracts are entitled to 32 days of leave plus 4 University closure days over the Winter break. They may also take up to 14 days of academic leave for conferences or fieldwork. All requests for time away from site must be agreed in advance with line managers. Further details will be provided upon appointment.Can I select which accommodation I'll be a Resident Assistant at, or where my bedroom will be located?During the application process we ask all candidates to detail any support needs they may have. This information will be taken into consideration when placing successful candidates. RA teams are formed with diversity in order to meet student needs as a priority, and placements within buildings are allocated strategically within our residences to ensure RAs are distributed across the community and in prime locations to support their residences.Please note that any personal information disclosed in the application regarding accommodation needs will not be considered during the assessment phases of the recruitment process. What is our approach to recruitment?We believe that our recruitment process should be a positive learning experience for applicants. For that reason we make the following commitments:The application process will be as much about you finding out if the Resident Assistant role is the right fit for you, as it is about us assessing your suitability for the role.Our processes will be fair, inclusive and transparent. We will try and help you succeed at every step by communicating clear expectations and timelines.If you are not successful we will aim to respond with feedback on your application within two weeks of a request being received.I am supposed to finish my degree this academic year but what if I'm expected to receive an extension for completing my degree? Can I still apply as an RA?If you're expected to receive an extension for completing your degree, you may still be eligible to apply as an RA. However, you will need to provide proof of such extension when submitting your application. Proof of extension is required to ensure that all RAs meet the necessary criteria of being fully matriculated and enrolled as full-time students.What kind of proof is acceptable for demonstrating an extension for completing my degree?Acceptable forms of proof may include official documentation from the University confirming the extension, such as a letter from your academic advisor or a copy of your updated academic plan.Apply Now This article was published on 2024-10-07
